Research leader Hymon-Parker retires July 1

Shirley HymonParker, Ph.D., CAES associate dean for research, retired July 1.

HymonParker was a leader and trail blazer in the fields of human sciences and agricultural sciences for more than 30 years. As the associate dean for research in charge of the agricultural research program, she established our Undergraduate Research Scholars Program and has provided oversight for more than $30 million/year in sponsored research.  She also provided leadership in implementing the 125th anniversary celebration to commemorate the establishment of the 1890 land-grant institutions.

From 2015 to 2018, she served as interim dean of the college, supervising academic, research and Extension programs. Under her leadership, the CAES established a strategic plan, Destination Excellence, and enhanced the efforts of Cooperative Extension. She also led the establishment of MOUs with universities in Africa and China.

“We wish Dr. Hymon-Parker well in this new phase of her life,” said Mohamed Ahmedna, dean of the college. “it has been my pleasure and privilege to have her as a trusted colleague and a valuable member of the CAES leadership team who gets things done in a timely, and most professional and collegial, manner, while always wearing her signature smile.”

Try Healthy magazine available through Cooperative Extension

The summer edition of Try Healthy, the quarterly magazine published by Extension at A&T, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), and the Try Healthy SNAP-ED program, is in production and expected to be available in mid-July. The magazine targets EFNEP and SNAP-ED participants and includes healthy recipes, budgeting and exercise tips, and ideas for family activities. University Farm featured in TV spots

The latest edition of “On Eastern Soil with Emily,” a television show featuring farming, features a tour of the N.C. A&T University Farm with Lydian Bernhardt, interim director of agricultural communications, serving as tour guide. The segment airs every Tuesday on WNCT-TV in Greenville, but you can watch it here.

N.C. agriculture panel highlights importance of research stations in semester’s first student forum

If the key to feeding a hungry planet is agricultural production, the key to production is agricultural research. That was the message of N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler and Teresa Lambert, division director of research stations, who visited campus virtually on Aug. 26 in the first of three forums planned this semester involving the NCDA&CS and the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences about issues in agriculture and policy. Students, faculty, Extension staff and other members of the CAES attended the first online discussion of the semester, with a question and answer mediated on Zoom by junior animal sciences major Tahira Jones, president of the college’s chapter of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS).
