SMITH NAMED COOPERATIVE EXTENSION ASSOCIATE ADMINISTRATOR

Claudette Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Claudette Smith, who has more than 35 years of experience in program planning, development and implementation, has been appointed associate administrator of Cooperative Extension at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, effective Oct. 1.

As the Cooperative Extension associate administrator, Smith’s responsibilities include providing leadership to county operations and state programs. She will guide the development and maintenance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, issue-based programming agenda that addresses the complexity of issues faced by North Carolina’s small, limited-resource farmers, communities, youth, families and individuals.

Smith’s notable experience includes serving as the program leader for Extension’s 4-H youth development and family and consumer sciences group, and for the agriculture and natural resources unit. She has also been a long-time family resource specialist.

She is responsible for signature programming, including the development of the Speedway to Healthy interactive exhibition for elementary students, and for the 2010 4-H National Science Experiment for which she convened a multidisciplinary A&T team that created and won the national competition to conduct the experiment live from campus.

Smith has a doctorate in family economics from The Ohio State University, a master’s in consumer economics from Cornell University, and a bachelor’s in home economics from A&T.

“Bringing the Fun Back to Fitness” at N.C. A&T Wellness Training Day

Shewana McSwain, the Try Healthy SNAP-Ed coordinator with Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T, joined forces with other campus and county faculty and staff, including Ryan O'Connor, Patrice Dollar, Katryn Eske, Ph.D., and Morgan Malone to lead an inspiring wellness training session during N.C. A&T's Division of Student Affairs End-of-Year Retreat earlier this summer. The event was held at Barber Park Event Center in Greensboro. Shewana and Ryan's segment, "Bringing the Fun Back to Fitness," was a highlight of the event and featured an over-and-under ball transfer competition and a hula hoop pass through relay race. Both sparked some spirited discussion and fostered team building.

NC AgrAbility, a program aimed at helping farmers, ranchers and other agricultural workers with disabilities, provided a way back to productivity for David Dyson, helping him to get a modified ATV after he became a quadriplegic. The 41-year-old Lee County farmer struck a sandbar while diving into the Black River during a family get-together in 2017.

Small Farms Week 2026 Celebrates 40Years of Growth and Impact

Nearly 400 attendees joined Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T this year in celebrating the 40th anniversary of Small Farms Week, the annual event recognizing the state’s small-scale producers and educating the public on their contribution to N.C.’s agricultural economy. Events in the counties, at the University Farm and a dinner in the Alumni Event Center celebrated the “Deep Roots, Strong Impact” of N.C. farming.
